San Francisco's Mission district, home to Bi-Rite, has evolved from a region of farms and orchards to the diverse neighborhood and destination that it is today. The Mission has always been prized for its good weather and, later, for its entertainment - in the late 1800s, the neighborhood boasted a zoo, horticultural gardens, and a racetrack.
Bi-Rite is just around the corner from Dolores Park, named after the nearby Mission Dolores. Over the years, the land that is now the park has served as a home to Native Americans of the Ohlone tribe, then later a Jewish cemetery, and a refugee camp for homeless families following the 1906 earthquake. Today the park serves as a communal backyard for residents of the Mission and beyond; it offers tennis courts, a playground, a soccer area, and lots of space for picnics and lounging.
In addition to the hundreds of individual neighbors who are a part of our community of food, we are also lucky enough to have Tartine bakery, Delfina, Range, Bar Tartine, and Dolores Park Cafe nearby.
