Celebrating a Year on Divisadero Street with Special Offers!

It’s hard to believe, but it’s already been a year since we opened our second Bi-Rite Market on Divisadero Street in the Western Addition, bringing our mission of creating community through food to a whole new neighborhood. It was a big undertaking that took several years to bring to fruition, and all of that work has been worth it! We’ve felt at home in the Mission District since Sam Mogannam‘s family first took over the original Bi-Rite neighborhood grocery 50 years ago, and we’ve continued to grow Bi-Rite into a family of businesses with our Creamery & Bakeshop and our non-profit community space, 18 Reasons, all located on the same block of 18th Street. It has been an honor over the past 12 months to expand that work into another burgeoning, vibrant area of San Francisco. From the day we first cast open our new doors on Divisadero Street, the people and businesses of the Western Addition have made us feel welcome, and we are incredibly grateful.

Help bring good tidings to families in need this December! Be a “local Santa” and support the our 2nd Annual Toy Drive, starting Friday, December 13thThis year, we’re expanding our reach and collecting toys for children and families living in the Mission and in the Western Addition. Donations from Bi-Rite Market Divisadero will go to the Western Addition Beacon Center (WABC), which inspires youth daily through arts and cultural programming, academic support, college prep and sports. All toys from Bi-Rite Market and Bi-Rite Creamery on 18th Street will go to Arriba Juntos, a Mission-based community organization that has been fostering self-sufficiency through occupational training and job opportunities for our neediest neighbors, for almost 50 years. Both organizations work incredibly hard to support local, disadvantaged families every day; we need your support to ensure that our neighbors have a great holiday.

We’re looking for new and unwrapped:

  • *Toys (for kids 12 and under)
    *Books
    *Sports equipment (e.g. basketballs and soccer balls)
    *Art supplies

The Best Chocolates I’ve Ever Tasted

GCDF2We stock a  wide assortment of excellent local artisanal chocolates at Bi-Rite, and as grocery buyer it’s my privilege to taste dozens of varieties in order to select the finest options for our stores. This year I was blown away by the chocolates crafted by gâté comme des filles. They’re something special, and I’m truly thrilled to bring them to our guests. The exquisite offerings from this small Oakland-based company will grace the shelves of both of our Market locations just in time for the holidays and are, quite simply, the best chocolates I’ve ever tasted.

GCDF1They are designed and crafted by chocolatier Alexandra Whisnant, who trained for her patisserie degree in France before working for Berkeley’s world-renowned restaurant Chez Panisse. She founded gâté comme des filles just this year and the company is in full swing, lovingly crafting the freshest chocolates you’ll ever taste.

Alexandra’s chocolates are a feast for the eyes as much as for the palate. Before you luxuriate in their rich  filling and to-die-for texture, take some time to appreciate their aesthetic beauty. Each design is bright and expressive, each piece glittery and unique. They’re so easy to covet, you might forget that their ultimate purpose is to be enjoyed for their sublime taste! But don’t wait too GCDF5long, for these marvelous chocolates, created by this master of the field, need to be eaten fresh in order to be optimally enjoyed; Alexandra’s recommendation is that they be eaten within five days of production. Without the constraint of prolonged shelf life, Alexandra is able to freely express the full potential of her ingredients, leading to the creation of vibrant flavors and pleasing textures not normally available in store-bought confections. As a result, they will not always be available to purchase and pre-orders are highly recommended. They make for a holiday gift like no other, but are meant to be promptly and thoroughly enjoyed, and we recommend that you encourage anyone fortunate to receive them as a gift to do just that.

We’ve spent about three years working towards this moment, so today is all about celebrating the long, winding path that brought us here. And what better way to do so than by treating ourselves to the newest additions to our Divis menu: the winners of our Divis Sandwich and Sundae contest!

Cocktail of the Month: NOPA’s Sunshine Fix

In honor of our opening on Divisadero we asked Yanni Kehagiaras, who runs the bar program at NOPA next door (did you know that Jeff Hanak, co-owner of NOPA, was a high school buddy of Sam’s?) to share one of their cocktail recipes with us. Yanni chose the Sunshine Fix, one of the most popular cocktails on their menu.

Yanni says it’s “straightforward, easy, and delicious. The recipe is equal parts City of London Gin, Aperol, and fresh lemon juice, with a dash of Angostura Bitters…garnished with a grapefruit twist.  So in addition to being a solid cocktail, it’s super easy to make.”

Bonus: It was featured recently on 7×7′s “50 Drinks to Try Before You Die” list!

 

SUNSHINE FIX

1oz City of London gin

1oz Aperol

1oz fresh squeezed lemon juice

1 dash Angostura bitters

Build all ingredients in a mixing glass, shake well with ice, and fine strain into your favorite glass. Express a grapefruit twist over the drink, and drop in. Serve immediately.

It’s Time: Bi-Rite Divis Opens March 13th!

We can’t even wait to open our doors at 550 Divisadero (at Hayes). Just like our 18th Street Market, Divis will be open every day from 9am-9pm and will be a one-stop shop for farm direct produce, a full-service butcher counter, deli with prepared foods from our on-site kitchen, natural wine & spirits, fresh bread, local dairy… and of course important doodads like toilet paper and deodorant.

It’s time!

What took us so long? We renovated and retrofitted the interior of the building –which was one of the original Safeways—while taking care to preserve the art deco façade. And we’re upping the ante from our 18th St. Market: Divis has an old world style cut-to-order cheese counter and an ice cream scoop shop right inside (yes, Sam’s sundae with chocolate ice cream, Maldon sea salt, bergamot olive oil and whipped cream will be here)!

We hope you’re ready to give us feedback on what dishes and items you love and what we can do better, so we can evolve together. We’ve got a 30 year lease, so we’re planning to be around for a while and we look forward to feeding the neighborhood for years.

The Mill: Warming up Divis for Us!

Sure we’ve been talking about our new Market on Divisadero a lot lately…but the favorite Divisadero-related topic in our staff break room might actually be the one a couple blocks up the street from us: the opening of The Mill! The Mill is a bakery and café collaboration between Jeremy of Four Barrel Coffee and Josey Baker, a bread baking, bicycle delivering, Vermont-repping guy who’s now operating San Francisco’s only flour mill in the space.

I’m proud to say our grocery team was hip to the goodness of Josey’s bread early on–they brought his loafs on to our shelves two years ago, and since he’s garnered quite a following.

Faun, our deli manager at Divis, might win the prize for biggest Mill fan so far. Get a load of all of the different toasts and brews she’s tasted so far:

“During the first week of the Mill being open, I’d already been there four times.  On Wednesday, I had a macchiato and some thickly cut Josey Baker whole wheat bread toasted and slathered with almond butter and honey.  It was perfect after my workout in Golden Gate Park. Saturday, we bought a partial loaf to have with eggs and bacon at home for breakfast. We toasted it and spooned my friend Laura’s homemade blackberry jam. Monday, I introduced a friend visiting from out of town – where else can you order toast with cinnamon sugar and butter with expertly made coffee?  And today I went back to pick up some more Four Barrel beans to grind and brew at home. Living around the corner, in Lower Haight, it’s a nice addition to the neighborhood.”

DIY: Contest for Bi-Rite Divisadero Special Sandwich & Sundae!

We’re opening our doors at 550 Divisadero in mid-March, and we’d love your help with the menu. So put on your chef’s hat and ponder this:

If Bi-Rite Divis were a sandwich, what would it look like? What would it taste like?

What about if it were an ice cream sundae? Would it be gooey? Salty? Spicy?

We’re asking you, our talented and vocal creative community, to help us create a special sandwich and sundae that will only be available at Bi-Rite Divis. We’re looking for a new frontier in deli and Creamery tastiness. No idea is too crazy, far flung or niche… think big, think small, think about what makes the Western Addition neighborhood tick!

Just make sure it’s finger lickin’ good.

Email us to submit your idea (each sundae or sandwich idea must include a menu name as well as the ingredients/components) for either a sandwich or sundae (or both!) by Friday, February 22, and we promise to salivate over every last entry until we select the winners. In addition to bragging rights, the two winners will receive a free festival pass ($95 value) to our first ever San Francisco Food & Farm Film Festival at the Roxie Theater, including the opening night bash at Four Barrel coffee. And of course, the free sandwich or sundae of their creation on opening day :-)

It’s a big day here, as we’re officially hiring for Bi-Rite Market Divisadero, Bi-Rite Market 18th Street and Bi-Rite Creamery! Please take a moment to read a bit about what we’re looking for–information about how to apply is at the bottom of this posting.

Why do I want to work for Bi-Rite?

We’re opening a second Market in San Francisco at the corner of Divisadero and Hayes, and we need passionate, hardworking, detail-oriented individuals who love food and feeding others. Both of our Markets (and our Creamery) are looking to fill a variety of positions including butchers, cooks, deli servers, grocery stockers and more.

Bi-Rite is a learning community, with endless opportunity for on-the-job training and education about food and service. What’s Bi-Rite Market Divisadero going to be like? When is it opening?

Like Bi-Rite Market 18th Street, Bi-Rite Market Divisadero will be a one-stop-shop neighborhood market with a full selection of farm-direct produce, groceries, fresh meat & fish, prepared foods, a full-service butcher and deli counter, wine and spirits, a health and beauty section and more. It’s slightly bigger than 18th Street, allowing for the addition of an ice cream shop inside the Market as well as a full-service cheese counter.  The new market is scheduled to open in early March 2013.

What positions are available?

We are looking for cashiers, ice cream scoopers, deli servers, service butchers, cooks, produce and grocery stockers, supervisors and a visual merchandising assistant. When will I start?

It depends on the position. Most staff will start working at Divisadero two weeks before the store opens. Divisadero is scheduled to open around the first week of March.

Support Bi-Rite Divis: Thursday July 26th at City Hall

GOOD NEWS: We’ve been assigned a date from the SF Planning Department for our conditional use hearing before the SF Planning Commission for the new Bi-Rite on Divisadero. The date is Thursday, July 26th, room 400 at City Hall: 1 Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett Place, at 12 noon.  We’d love your support at City Hall that day if at all possible; if you follow us on facebook and twitter, we’ll be sending updates once the agenda is posted about what time exactly our project will be discussed.

Having a group of neighbors and friends present and willing to share their support will help our efforts to get approval for our project so we can open as quickly as possible. If you can’t be there in person on July 26th, please consider sending a letter of support to the commissioners so we can include your voice. Please copy us on any correspondence if you can.

If you have any questions or concerns about the project, we would love to hear from you in advance of the hearing. We will be sharing our building plans for the new store at two upcoming neighborhood association meetings. You can catch us at the North of the Panhandle Neighborhood Association meeting at Café Oasis on July 19th at 7pm, and at the Alamo Square Neighborhood Association meeting at Chateau Tivoli on July 23rd at 7:00pm. Calvin and I (co-partners of Bi-Rite Divisadero) will be on hand to answer any questions you have.

We’ve received a lot of questions and feedback from our fellow neighbors, business owners, non-profits, and community leaders about our opening – please, keep it coming. Your insights and suggestions are always welcome.

We’re especially looking forward to growing our community of staff, guests, and producers. We are excited to serve a new neighborhood and to growing our staff as we hire 50 new people (hopefully many that live close to the new store!). And with two stores, our producers—the farmers, ranchers, bakers and food artisans we support and whose products feed all of us—will have another market to sell their goods, which will help them to grow and sustain their businesses.
