Bi-Rite Divis: Ready for Bay to Breakers on May 18th!

Bay to Breakers 2013 - Andrew Dalton

Outside Bi-Rite Divisadero at Bay to Breakers 2013. Photo by Andrew Dalton.

Bay to Breakers is coming up on Sunday, May 18th and the event route runs right past our Divisadero Street Market. To enhance the celebration, we’re opening a full hour earlier than usual at 8am, and will be ready with everything you need to stay happy and hydrated. Bay to Breakers isn’t just the oldest consecutively-run annual footrace in the world, it’s also one of the biggest, craziest, and most fun days on the San Francisco summer calendar!

Bi-Rite Market on Divisadero is the newer of our two Market locations, having flung open its doors to the Western Addition just a few months before last year’s Bay to Breakers. We had a great time and we’re looking to having even more fun our second time around.

Viet sandwiches

Sandwiches! We’ll have ‘em ready to go for you as the race goes by.

We’ll be highlighting all of the snacks, sandwiches, beer and water that you’ll need to enjoy the day. Even our Bi-Rite Creamery Scoop Shop will be serving up ice cream! Whether you’re running the race or cheering from the sidelines, make sure to get up extra early and come by Divis. The day can be crazy, but we’ll be there for you, an hour early and with everything you need ready to go, to make it chilled out, fun and cool. See you on the 18th!

Celebrating SF Made – Part II!

booze displayyyyyyyyyyyyyWith the Fancy Food Show in town, Raph took some time to tell you about some of the fantastic local, artisanal food products that he’s highlighting at our Markets. To accompany them, we’ve also got a wide selection of great spirits and beer that are proudly crafted right here in San Francisco. Here are a few that I’m particularly excited about this season.

Sutton Cellars Vermouth – A thicker-bodied, grapey vermouth that tastes beautiful all on its own over ice. Crafted from a base of Sonoma white wine and infused with botanicals, including rosemary from the bush near the winery.

No. 209 is a San Francisco gin distillery owned by the Rudd family (owners of Rudd Oakville Estate Winery and Dean & DeLuca). They pride No. 209 on being a “handcrafted, unique and intriguing spirit that is truly artisanal in quality”.

Junipero Gin, which was given the “Best Gin in Show” award at the 2012 NY World Wine and Spirits show, is made by hand  in a small distillery in the Potrero Hill section of San Francisco. Anchor Distilling Company, which produces Junipero Gin, also produces Anchor 18th Century Spirit Whiskey, hand-crafting from a mash of 100% rye malt.

Legendary San Francisco brewer Anchor Brewing, an affiliate of Anchor Distilling Company, produces Anchor Bock Beer, a fine seasonal offering that’s dark, strong, refreshing and perfect for the onset of spring in San Francisco.

Junipero

Speakeasy Betrayal is a seasonal release from this San Francisco brewer. It’s an Imperial Red Ale with flavors of caramel and malt and hints of tropical fruits. With its rich mouthfeel and full body, it pairs well with stew steak.

Almanac Biere de Chocolat is a collaboration between nomadic farm-to-barrel San Francisco brewers Almanac and our friends at the phenomenal San Francisco chocolatier Dandelion Chocolate. The result is this rich, decadent, dark and smoky beer.

You can find all of these local products in our Made in SF display at Bi-Rite Market on Divisadero, and just ask for them at 18th Street and we’ll be happy to help you out. We hope you enjoy these products from our friends and neighbors as much as we do!

Celebrating SF Made!

Display 1It’s that time of year! The Fancy Food Show is back in our beloved city by the Bay. As food-lovers, we consider ourselves fortunate that this premier event for specialty food makers comes to San Francisco every year. And as the Grocery Buyer for Bi-Rite, it’s always a thrill to try new products from outstanding food artisans, and to welcome them to our stores to meet our staff and peruse our shelves.

Those shelves are stocked full of delicious foods from great local producers, and to celebrate all the visitors from near and far to the Fancy Food Show, we are highlighting some of our local favorites this month. Visit the displays marked “SF Made” and you’ll see why!

Boozely'sBoozely’s Pickles are made by Brad Boozely, one of our neighbors on 18th Street. Brad comes from a long line of picklers and his love for the art shows in the crisp, tasty crunch of his pickles. He supports local farmers with his selection of produce.

We Love Jam is a two-person operation where literally everything, from recipe development to cooking to graphic and web design, is done in-house. The owners have forty years of combined experience experimenting in the kitchen, and work directly with local family farms to source the best fruit possible for their amazing jams.

Hey Boo 1

Hey Boo Coconut Jam, one of our most popular “SF Made” products! Coconut jam, also known as Srikaya in Indonesia, has been consumed for hundreds of years in Southeast Asia. Hey Boo’s San Francisco version is slow-cooked in in small batches using high-quality natural ingredients. It has a silky smooth texture with a golden color and a rich creaminess that is achieved by cooking the ingredients according to traditional Srikaya-making techniques.

Dandelion Chocolate are neighbors and great friends to Bi-Rite Market, and are a favorite among our guests and staff. From their location in the Mission District, they operate a bean-to-bar chocolate factory where temper small batches of beans and then mold and package each bar by hand. They have close relationships with their cacao growers and have prioritized sustainability since opening in 2010. Stop by for a visit while you’re in the neighborhood!

Kika's 2

Kika’s Treats, another neighbor, was founded in 2006 by Cristina Arantes, who produces pure chocolate-covered confections using a variety of alternative sweeteners and is committed to using the finest locally-sourced ingredients to make her delicious treats. She also gives back to the community through in-kind donations to local non-profits by donating 5% of net profits to La Cocina, a non-profit food incubator in San Francisco that helps low-income entrepreneurs start and grow their businesses.

All of these products will be highlighted at both of our Market locations, so stop by for a look, chat and taste. We look forward to sharing these products from our friends and neighbors with you!

Kids with Santa at the Arriba Juntos Holiday Celebration

Help bring good tidings to families in need this December! Be a “local Santa” and support the our 2nd Annual Toy Drive, starting Friday, December 13thThis year, we’re expanding our reach and collecting toys for children and families living in the Mission and in the Western Addition. Donations from Bi-Rite Market Divisadero will go to the Western Addition Beacon Center (WABC), which inspires youth daily through arts and cultural programming, academic support, college prep and sports. All toys from Bi-Rite Market and Bi-Rite Creamery on 18th Street will go to Arriba Juntos, a Mission-based community organization that has been fostering self-sufficiency through occupational training and job opportunities for our neediest neighbors, for almost 50 years. Both organizations work incredibly hard to support local, disadvantaged families every day; we need your support to ensure that our neighbors have a great holiday.

We’re looking for new and unwrapped:

  • *Toys (for kids 12 and under)
    *Books
*Sports equipment (e.g. basketballs and soccer balls)
    *Art supplies

You can drop off these goodies in the toy barrels at the entrances of:

Bi-Rite Market Divisadero: December 13th to December 18th, 9AM to 9PM
Bi-Rite Market 18th: December 13th to December 20th, 9AM to 9PM

Tis’ the season and help us do it again!

The Best Chocolates I’ve Ever Tasted

GCDF2We stock a  wide assortment of excellent local artisanal chocolates at Bi-Rite, and as grocery buyer it’s my privilege to taste dozens of varieties in order to select the finest options for our stores. This year I was blown away by the chocolates crafted by gâté comme des filles. They’re something special, and I’m truly thrilled to bring them to our guests. The exquisite offerings from this small Oakland-based company will grace the shelves of both of our Market locations just in time for the holidays and are, quite simply, the best chocolates I’ve ever tasted.

GCDF1They are designed and crafted by chocolatier Alexandra Whisnant, who trained for her patisserie degree in France before working for Berkeley’s world-renowned restaurant Chez Panisse. She founded gâté comme des filles just this year and the company is in full swing, lovingly crafting the freshest chocolates you’ll ever taste.

Alexandra’s chocolates are a feast for the eyes as much as for the palate. Before you luxuriate in their rich  filling and to-die-for texture, take some time to appreciate their aesthetic beauty. Each design is bright and expressive, each piece glittery and unique. They’re so easy to covet, you might forget that their ultimate purpose is to be enjoyed for their sublime taste! But don’t wait too GCDF5long, for these marvelous chocolates, created by this master of the field, need to be eaten fresh in order to be optimally enjoyed; Alexandra’s recommendation is that they be eaten within five days of production. Without the constraint of prolonged shelf life, Alexandra is able to freely express the full potential of her ingredients, leading to the creation of vibrant flavors and pleasing textures not normally available in store-bought confections. As a result, they will not always be available to purchase and pre-orders are highly recommended. They make for a holiday gift like no other, but are meant to be promptly and thoroughly enjoyed, and we recommend that you encourage anyone fortunate to receive them as a gift to do just that.

To indulge in gâté comme des filles this holiday season, keep the following delivery dates in mind:

Friday, November 22ndGCDF3

Friday, November 29th

Friday, December 6th

Friday, December 13th

Sunday, December 22nd

Saturday, December 28th

This weekend, Alexandra will be spending time at both of our market locations, where you can taste and discuss her chocolates with her. She’ll be at our Divisadero store from 2-5pm on Saturday, November 23rd and at our 18th Street store from 2-5pm on Sunday, November 24th. If you miss out on these tastings, don’t despair – the chocolates will be available on our shelves throughout the holiday season, and we’ll be offering several more chances to try them during Christmastime. I promise you this is one you don’t want to miss out on. We’ll see you at the Market.

November Wine Blitz at Bi-Rite 18th Street!

wine blitzWe can’t believe it’s already time for our November Wine Blitz at 18th Street! We’ve been doing a fair bit of wine-hoarding and are stoked with the selection we have in store for the two upcoming Holiday Wine Blitzes. The first Blitz kicks off on Monday, November 11th and runs through Sunday, November 17th. If you’ve never participated in one of our Wine Blitzes before, here’s how it works: at our 18th St. location only, during the above-mentioned dates, you’ll get 20% off any 12 or more bottles of wine, mixed and matched however you like! Worried about carrying that wine home? We’re also offering free deliveries within San Francisco for Wine Blitz purchases. We’ve timed this sale perfectly to allow you to stock up on everything you’ll need for the approaching Holiday Season – especially Thanksgiving and Hanukkah.

Can’t make it during that week? Worried about crowds? We love pre-orders! Come by the store, shoot us an email or give us a ring before Wine Blitz starts and let us know what you’re looking for. We’re happy to pick out wines for you, apply the 20% discount during the week of Blitz, and set them aside for pick-up or delivery. And don’t forget to come to the Preview Tasting tomorrow, November 7th from 6 to 8 PM at 18 Reasons, where you can sample 30+ wines and get started writing your own Blitz Wish List.

The wines below are just a few of many that we’re excited to feature for the November Wine Blitz. They’re all reds that are perfect for your Thanksgiving dinner. And yes, the classic pairing for turkey is Pinot Noir, but we like to think outside the bottle and pair our poultry with something different. All of these are limited and probably won’t be available much past our November Blitz, so be sure to add them to your Blitz List!

madeleine2011 Madeleine ‘Maddie’ Vin de Table  -  $16.99

Damien Georis discovered his passion for wines when he was a young boy living in Belgium and an old family friend, Madeleine, gave him his first sip of wine. This sip inspired Damien’s career as winemaker, and he later went on to study enology at Bordeaux University. He found additional inspiration in the Loire Valley and its signature grape, Cabernet Franc. Damien moved to California in 2005, determined to create a wine that would best express this elegant and refined varietal. ‘Maddie’ is his entry-level, everyday sipping wine, named for his wine muse. A blend of 75% Cabernet Franc and 25% Syrah, this wine is fresh, vibrant, juicy and filled with aromas of herbs and pepper.

2012 Franz Gojer St. Magdalener Classico  -  $22.99gojer

Franz Gojer is a master of Shiava and Lagrein, two native grapes of the Alto Adige. His Glogglhof vineyard at the heart of St. Magdalener produces some of the top wines from Alto Adige. The St. Magdalener Classico is blend of 95% Shiava and 5% Lagrein and is the perfect balance between elegance and power. We get aromas of violets and cherries along with a soft, velvety texture and round tannins. We love this with a traditional speck from this region of northern Italy, but it’s also a perfect pairing for your Thanksgiving meal.

dupasuier2010 Domaine Dupasquier Gamay  -  $19.99

It’s no secret we love Gamay at Bi-Rite! It’s our alternative to pricey Pinot Noir and is a very versatile and food-friendly grape! We’re always trying to source Gamay from different regions, especially since the grape can be very transparent and expresses terroir extremely well. One of our favorite Gamay producers is David Dupasquier. He has dramatic and picturesque vineyards in Savoie, high up near the Alps. Dupasquier’s Gamay is clean, high-toned, and minerally; it speaks of both the place and varietal from whence it comces. This is one of those limited wines that sells out fast, so don’t get caught buying just one bottle!

Wine Blitz Weekend: Spritzy Summer Whites!

Blitz! Blitz! Blitz! Our Spring Wine Blitz is in its final days! Now through Sunday, May 19th, we’re offering 20% off purchases of 12 or more bottles of wine, with free delivery with San Francisco! This year’s Blitz is happening only at our 18th St. location, but we’re happy to take orders by phone (415-241-9760) or email if you can’t make it to 18th St. in person.

Here’s the final installment of our Wine Blitz Picks – wines we’re excited to have in stock for our spring sale. This weekend, we’re all about putting a little spritz in your summer! All of these wines have a little bit of natural effervescence making them all no-brainers for refreshing summer wines.

2010 Bengoetxe Getariako Txakolina  -  $17.99; Blitz Price  -  $14.39Bengoetxe Getariako Txakolina

Txakoli (say ‘chok-o-lee’) is the go-to wine for the people of Basque country Spain. With a long tradition, this style of wine has been made and drunk in copious amounts since the mid-1800s. It’s always light, crisp, refreshing, and bottled just before fermentation finishes resulting in a little bit of residual carbon-dioxide in the wine. The Basque people drink it by the gallon and with anything from local fresh fish to meat; and you should too! Bengoetxe is one of the only organic Txakoli producers in Basque country and is known for holding their wines back before release. The result is a slightly richer style of Txakoli with just a hint of effervescence. Crisp, tart lime flavors and a salty minerality make this very mouth-watering.

ameztoi2012 Ameztoi Rubentis  -  $21.99; Blitz Price  -  $17.59

Ameztoi is one of the best Txakoli producers in the area, with a picturesque location that overlooks the Bay of Biscay. They’re also one of the few Txakoli producers dedicated to staying traditional while other less-reputable wineries around them falsify the typical spritzy-ness of Txakoli by artificially adding CO2. They’ve experimented in bottling a rosé Txakoli, and we have to say it’s one of our favorite rosés every year! Light raspberry aromas and followed by flavors of tart blood orange, minerals, sea salt, and bracing acidity. We certainly understand why the Basque people drink this stuff by the gallon.

2011 Casebianche La Matta  -  $19.99; Blitz Price  -  $15.99la matta

Casebianche is a newer winery in Campania, Italy; it was founded by Betty and Pasquale Mitrano in 2000. They’re dedicated to organic viticulture, naturally made wines, and have produced some great terroir-driven wines from their small vineyard. This Spumante Integrale, is bottled unfiltered and unfined just before fermentation ends, trapping some residual CO2. Made from Fiano, typical to Campania, it has aromas of fresh pear, quince, and Meyer lemon. Just lightly bubbly, it’s medium-bodied with a dry-finish and flavors reminiscent of a tart, dry, cider. It’s very limited – grab some while you can!

Beat the crowds! Place an order via e-mail or give us a call at 415-241-9760 by Sunday to order your case. You can choose 12 bottles of your fave vino or mix and match!
