Bi-Rite Produce


We prioritize great tasting produce grown by a passionate farmer who enriches the land and the community. Bi-Rite is committed to building relationships with these farmers who allow us to offer amazing local, seasonal produce – to us, local means the freshest, perfectly ripe product possible, delivered to our door shortly after harvest. Many of our amazing farmers drive the produce to us themselves!  Over 90% of our produce is organic; during peak summer season nearly 70% of our produce is farm-direct as well. Our in-store signage always indicates the provenance and growing method of an item.

Farm-direct produce has become the backbone of our beautiful selection, and we work directly with over 50 farms in California, allowing us to celebrate each season’s unique product at its peak ripeness. We also work closely with our distribution companies, allowing us to highlight the amazing flavor of every piece of produce on our shelves.

Bi-Rite Family Farms

In 2008, we made a conscious and very exciting decision to start growing our own fruits and vegetables. We pride ourselves on building relationships with our farmers and ranchers, giving us a strong understanding of how our food is produced. In an effort to get even closer to our food and give our staff the opportunity to get their hands in the soil, we started a small farm in Sonoma, CA.  Located 40 miles away, just an hour north of our Markets, the staff has the opportunity to harvest veggies, and within 24 hours see them in our produce departments or prepared in a farm fresh deli dish.  We have even created Public Label products using our farm ingredients, like Green Garlic Pesto and Tomato Sauce. Through Bi-Rite Farm we have the opportunity to be a more vital part of the food systems and change the way grocery stores source their fruits and vegetables. In 2015, we expanded the farm from one to three acres, and will continue to grow crops for our produce department, kitchens, and Public Label products.

Simon Richard| Produce Buyer, Bi-Rite Family of Businesses

Simon Richard joined the Bi-Rite Family of Businesses in 2002, after passing a “Help Wanted” sign on the 18th Street storefront and stopping in to chat with the friendly staff. Simon began farming organically in 1995, and that same year started the Durango Farmers Market in southern Colorado. Simon completed his bachelor’s degree in Sustainable Agriculture Production and farmed organically for 6 years before relocating to San Francisco. Through his personal farming experience and his ability to relate to the challenges associated with organic farming, Simon has developed Bi-Rite’s over 50 farm-direct relationships, bringing incredibly high-quality produce and offering unique varieties of seasonal fruits and vegetables.  Simon was eager to get back to the soil, and joined Sam in starting Bi-Rite Farm in Sonoma, dedicated to educating staff and guests about the value and importance of growing your own food.
